Kilimanjaro 2028

Tanzania’s Summit2Adventure, Kilimanjaro

Is this for me? Can I do it?
This is a question we can’t answer for you. We’d put this at 60% mental, 40% physical. You have got to come into this journey with a “I am doing this” attitude, not a “I don’t know if I can do it” attitude. In regards to the physical component, training can’t be half-assed. Running, hiking, biking, swimming, going up, and going down, are all crucial training components to making it to the top successfully.
Someone living at higher altitude may ultimately have an easier ascent to the top. However, people living at sea level complete this summit regularly. New Yorkers, Californians, Floridians, Brits, etc. – all are welcome!
The strategy our climbing tour operator has put in place is designed to have the highest success rate. Go up slowly. Go up higher than you’ll camp and descend. Pole Pole (slowly slowly) will get us all to the top. In addition, there is a prescribed medication called DIAMOX which is strongly recommended. We can’t require the medication, but if we could we would. This is an incredibly common drug that assists your body in climbing up high elevations.
The tour operator has a warehouse of goods it rents to its clients regularly. We’ll provide the rental list along with costs so you can decide to bring your own gear or rent from them.
No medications are required for your trip up Kilimanjaro. However, should you decide to spend more time in Tanzania in places like the Serengeti and Zanzibar, the risk for things like malaria become much higher. In general, that’s the only advice we’ll give on the subject. Ultimately, you should consult your physician as well as the www.cdc.gov for additional guidance on this subject.
Hakuna Matata! No worries at all. Should you not be able to make it to the top, you’ll descend before the rest of the group. If it’s the day before the final ascent, we’ll see you at the final camp – Camp Mweka. If it was much sooner, you’ll have the option to check back into the hotel where we start and finish. This scenario will come at an additional cost to you.
3-hotel nights, 6-nights camping, all guides, all porters, dinner on night 1 at the hotel, 3 breakfasts at the hotel, all meals on the trek, a celebratory lunch on our final day, transportation to/from the airport, transportation to/from the O’Brien School for the Massai, and transportation to/from the National Park. All pictures and videos filmed will be included too.
Airfare, a few meals, and gratuity to staff. Total gratuity for all of your guides, chefs, and porters should be $400 US Dollars, in cash, in an envelope. You can’t imagine how thankful your team will be for this gratuity.
Two people to a tent. For that reason, we do highly recommend you recruit that friend, family-member, and/or loved one to join you on this life-changing adventure. We can attempt to match you with another solo female or solo male traveler, but these are tight quarters for 6 nights!
When we bring 100-people, a record for Kilimanjaro, our tour operator looks at this like 10 groups of 10. There is no such thing as a 100-person dining tent! What this means is you can create your own group of 10, come as a 2-person party and we will find you 8 more, or throw caution to the wind and let the pod cards fall where they may. Rest assured, we’ll be thoughtful when assigning people to pods based on age, gender, etc.
In 2025, Merritt Hopper, Founder of Race2Adventure and Summit2Adventure, brought his 16 year old son. He rocked the whole thing with zero issues. So the short answer is yes. However, we at Summit2Adventure have decided to place an age minimum of 14 years old for this experience.
Dry and warm. Anything is possible, so rain pants and rain jacket will be required, but picking February was very purposeful. In addition, the week we have selected lands directly on a FULL MOON! These conditions are as ideal as they get.
Unfortunately, no. This is the one opportunity to summit Kilimanjaro with Summit2Adventure. There will be other summits in other countries and continents coming up, but none will mimic this experience.

Being in great shape is the goal here. Unlike a Race2Adventure, you won’t get by with a, “Whoops, I should have trained for this and didn’t.” You’ll have cheated yourself out of an experience of a lifetime. For those wanting to take their training to the next level, we have two long weekends scheduled for the summer and fall of 2027 in Colorado. On each of the long weekends we will summit a 14er (14,000 foot mountain). We’ll Pole Pole (slowly, slowly) to the top and fill you with even more confidence that you’ve got this!

For any other questions, please never hesitate to contact merritt@race2adventure.com. He and his team have excellent answers based on their own personal experiences reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro in June 2025.
